IN commemoration and remembrance of the end of the First World War next month, 1,000 Beacons of Light will be lit at 7pm on 11th November throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories - a century after the guns fell silent.
It was remarked by Britain’s Foreign Minister, Sir Edward Grey in 1914 that: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” and then the world was plunged into the darkness of the horrors of the First World War. Millions were killed or wounded, and the devastation of the war horrified the world.
In this centenary year, more than 830 councils, communities and other organisations nationwide have already confirmed their involvement by lighting WWI Beacons of Light that evening.
They include the town and community councils of Monmouth, Chepstow, Usk, Shirenewton, Magor with Undy, Portskewett and it is hoped that the beacons will form a network of light across the country so that everyone will be able to see at least one.
Monmouth’s beacon will be at the Kymin, and Chepstow’s at the Chepstow Rugby Club.
Any town or community council or organisation interested in purchasing a special commemorative beacon for the event can contact: Bullfinch Gas Equipment, Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham, B11 2AJ; 0121 7652000. The price is £360 plus VAT including carriage within the UK Mainland.
The burners will have a distinct design to commemorate the event – with the motif ‘WWI 1914 18’ around the circumference – and will sit atop a two metre high stand with an anchor for fixing to the ground.
A network of beacons have been lit on previous occasions including the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012 and to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day in 2015.
The Monmouthshire and Chepstow Beacons will be publishing a special commemorative edition on 31st October to mark the days ‘the guns fell silent’.
