SIR, January marks Human Trafficking Prevention Month, raising awareness of the estimated 27 million slaves around the world. Trafficking involves the often hidden economic exploitation of people, especially women and children, and is another word for modern day slavery. The latest United Nations report revealed the number of victims worldwide has doubled since 2010. Official figures from the National Referral Mechanism suggest human trafficking rose by 33 per cent in the UK between 2012 and 13. The high profile case of Darrell Simester who was kept as a slave for 13 years at a Cardiff farm illustrates how necessary this awareness month is. The reality is there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of invisible people trapped in various forms of enslavement right here in Wales. Safer Wales helps victims of trafficking and campaigns to raise awareness of the problem in our communities here in Wales. We encourage anyone who is either currently being exploited, is at risk of exploitation or knows someone who may be, to seek support by calling us on 029 2022 0033. Just one call has the potential to change a vulnerable person's life for the better. Barbara Natesegara MBE (CEO at Safer Wales)
