A new BBC Wales documentary tells the inside story of cuts and job losses at Monmouthshire County Council (MCC).

Next Monday (30th January) BBC Cymru Wales current affairs series Week In Week Out returns with a 45-minute special programme looking at how the council faces tough choices dealing with multi-million pound budget cuts.

Week In Week Out has spent nine months behind the scenes at MCC as it faces cash cuts, job losses and a move from its crumbling headquarters. The programme examines the pressures on staff and politicians as they try to make the organisation leaner and more efficient; the council is Wales' lowest funded council and has to make cuts of £5.2m this year and £4m in 2012-13.

Since last year, 361 posts have been closed and hundreds of workers are getting used to new ways of working, such as the use of laptop computers in order to reduce the number of desks, as they move out of County Hall in Cwmbran to new offices in Magor.

There are emotional scenes as cleaners lose their jobs at County Hall and maintenance staff wait to hear their fate.

There are angry scenes at a café in Abergavenny as a councillor is confronted by the owners who believe their business will be destroyed when supermarket giants Morrisons move to the town. The row over the development has caused fierce opposition but the council says it is determined to go ahead and sell the site so that it can put the money it makes into improving the county's schools.
