IT HASN'T been the best of weeks for Monmouth RFC.

Not only did the first XV lose two consecutive matches, the club was informed by manager Andrew Lewis that he plans to retire at the end of the season after 12 years in the job.

The committee was taken aback by the news at its recent meeting, not only because Andrew Lewis has filled the role so competently for so long, but also when it dawned on them the breadth and depth of all that 'Lewy' does, for the club in general and for the first XV in particular.

The search for a successor has already begun, but as the chairman Mel Wheeler said while thanking Lewis for all his efforts: "It will be near impossible to find someone to fill his very substantial shoes".
