Female fire-fighters will be well provided for at Whitchurch Fire Station if their planning application is approved by Herefordshire Council.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire Brigade have asked the council for permission to build an extension to the single storey section of the Fire Station in School Road, Whitchurch.

Alex Makay of the Fire Brigade told The Ross Gazette: "We have to make provision for female fire-fighters. We do not have any at the moment in Whitchurch or in many of the other retained fire stations in the county but the Brigade is actively engaged in recruiting female fire-fighters."

He said that it is a very good job for young, fit women, perhaps with young children as the Brigade can offer plenty of support with child care arrangements. Mr Makay said that the Brigade particularly wants ladies who can offer day-time cover, perhaps when children are at school.
