Lucy Hickman, aged 14 from Ross, was jumping for joy following her recent success on the athletics field. Lucy, a pupil at John Kyrle High School, added yet another medal to her collection following two golds at the District and County athletics finals recently. Last weekend she took the Junior Girls high jump title at the Mason Trophy, a prestigious competition for the regions top young athletes, held in Birmingham. She had to produce a lifetime best of 1 metres 55 centimetres in the latter stages of the competition, clearing the bar on her third and final attempt. Jumping this height means Lucy has reached the qualifying standard for selection for the English Schools' Athletics finals in Gateshead on July 11th and 12th where the top school athletes from all over England will be competing. Three other athletes from John Kyrle also qualified for the Mason Trophy following their gold medal performances at the County Championships. These were Harry Haile in the 400m who ran a personal best of 56.00 seconds, Vanessa Brann who also ran a PB in the 1500m of 5mins 02 seconds, and Samantha Griffiths who came third in the 100m in 13.2secs.
