SIR,
There will be many residents of Monmouth who have never experienced such a clear sky over their town as that they have witnessed recently.
The town is situated beneath one of the busiest air corridors in the UK, with a constant stream of air traffic arriving and departing from Western destinations, each plane streaking the sky with con-trails at altitudes of between 35,000 and 40,000 feet that gradually disperse in the jet stream during the day leaving a man-made hazy cloud covering most of the sky by evening.
That is before the 'once in a life-time' total lock down of UK airspace that we have experienced during the last few days.
Before we gratefully reach for our sunhats, spare a thought for both the many thousands of people whose travel plans have been trashed, and also those stranded around the globe in increasingly difficult personal circumstances.
John Vaughton
(Monmouth)
