AN arson attack at Caldicot School earlier this year has caused an estimated £5,000 worth of damage, according to Monmouthshire County Council (MCC). Plans have been approved by the school governors to install more CCTV cameras at the school to enhance the security of the building. Peter Nurcombe, chair of governors, said: "The most important thing is to make sure the building is secure so something like this doesn't happen again." It is thought the fire was started by intruders breaking a window to enter the building who then set fire to the blinds. The fire was contained to the first floor and was extinguished by the service. If the fire had been left unnoticed it reportedly had the potential to cause millions of pounds worth of damage. Speaking at the time, a spokesperson from Gwent Police, said: "Gwent Police and colleagues from the fire service were called at approximately 8.20am on Saturday 26th April to reports of a fire at Caldicot Comprehensive School. "The fire service quickly extinguished the fire before any major damage ccould be caused. "Officers are treating the fire as suspicious and are investigating the cause." No arrests have been made since the incident and police are still appealing for information. If you have any information about the fire, contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log number 106.
