SIR, Our councillors should remember that they are elected to protect the interests of the electorate and not those of unelected mandarins. They should stand back and look at Monmouth Comprehensive School, the pool and other buildings and realise that the destruction of these buildings to provide a foundation for what appears to be a roof over a playground is not to the benefit of our children's future. On top of this, the electorate is expected to find £6 million for a new pool with a sauna etc, which may turn out to be a paddling pool. The council claims it has identified the funding for the replacement pool. This should probably translate as: they have decided which services to cut and how much they can increase the Council Tax. The money in the council's coffers is ours, for our benefit. Wherever they find the £6 million, it is our money and we end up paying twice for a fantasy pool which may or may not materialise. We already have a perfectly good pool, thank you. The only way this new pool can be paid for without charging the electorate is for the councillors to pay out of their own pockets.
