A proposal for a new controversial 45 acre solar farm at Wentwood has been met with growing anger from residents. The plansm which have received more than 100 objections, could be approved next Tuesday (5th August) by county councillors. Fresh fears have been raised surrounding the plans being discussed in peak holiday times with a skeleton planning committee. Resident Tim Miles, whose farm sits directly opposite the site, believes the discussion of plans in August would have an impact on its outcome. He said: "Planning used not to hold committee meetings in August because attendance of the full committee was difficult, as was public participation. "In spite of requests by David Davies MP, Councillor Graham Down and Nick Ramsay AM, the planning office seem determined to view the proposal in August when very few members of the public will be able to attend and also only a skeleton planning committee will be sitting due to holidays. "It's a huge development bang in the middle of a Special Landscape Area crossed by bridleways and footpaths. "The development will resemble tarmacking an area of 46 acres and surrounding it with a 10ft fence with nearly 80 CCTV cameras." If successful, the site at Buckwell Farm, Pen y Cae Mawr, will see the erection of 32,430 panels, each measuring more than a metre wide and two metres high. According to the planning report published by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) the solar farm would contribute towards the Welsh Government's renewable energy target from non-wind power sources. It is estimated the farm would provide 2,120 homes with electricity whilst avoiding 3,286 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. A public meeting was held last December where members of the public were able to voice their concerns over the proposal. Councillor Graham Down of the Shirenewton ward said he is "appalled" that the application is to be discussed in the middle of summer. He said: "I understand the world keeps turning but for something as controversial as this and particularly when it is of such public interest, to be discussed in August, I think it looks bad. "I am completely opposed to the industrialisation of this area. It is the wrong project in the wrong place." A spokesperson for MCC said: "It is worth noting that the application was registered in November 2013, so reporting to August 2014 is not being over hasty, and because the monthly planning committee does not have a summer recess there is no reason to be selective about which planning applications are reported over holiday periods. "No objector will be disadvantaged as all objections and representations will be summarised in the officer report, or as late correspondence, and even if some objectors are away, only one can speak at Committee, along with one supporter and one community council representative. "We're aware that Planning Committee is held on the first Tuesday of each month so we ensure that sufficient staff are available to cover meetings even during the peak holiday period."
