MONMOUTH AM Nick Ramsay has been informed by Monmouthshire County Council that speeds on the Kymin Road are not of sufficient concern to warrant speed controls.

Mr Ramsay, who asked the council to explain why local residents’ request for speed restrictions had been turned down, said: “Naturally local residents are very unhappy with this decision and are questioning why the National Trust have put traffic calming bumps on the approach road to the Roundhouse and Temple if speeding is not a problem.

“According to the council’s review, the mean speed recorded over a seven day period at one location was 25.79mph and 22.03mph at another, however local residents maintain that the speed detection cables were placed inappropriately on the brow of the hill rather than on the very steep and narrow part of the road where the worst speeding problem occurs.

“The council also point out that the narrowness and alignment of the Kymin Road assist in constraining vehicular speeds and add that it is standard practice for the National Trust to include traffic calming on the roads and car park areas within their properties.

“Local residents will understandably be extremely disappointed with this decision as they feel that speeding traffic poses a very real danger on this narrow road.  The council say they will keep the issue under review so hopefully they will look at it again at a later date.”
