Catherine Jones has been named as the new headteacher of Osbaston Church in Wales School.

Mrs Jones had been acting head during Osbaston's recent Estyn inspection, which praised teaching in the school and said it had good prospects for improvement.

She will be officially appointed as headteacher in September.

Antony Smith, the chair of governors at Osbaston, said: "Although Mrs Jones was the school's acting head, she and the other candidates were subjected to a rigorous application, shortlisting and interview process where all aspects of leadership, knowledge, skills, management and teaching were tested.

"We set a very high threshold and were delighted that Mrs Jones scored exceptionally high in every category and proved beyond all doubt that she is absolutely the right person for the job.

"Since temporarily taking the helm last year she has steered the school to a position where Estyn Inspectors believe the school has good teaching and good prospects for the future.

"In addition, the Church In Wales Section 50 report scored Osbaston 'good' in all areas.

"For me this shows that not only is Mrs Jones a highly competent and committed leader of our school but also that she has a dedicated and inspired team working with her."

Vaughan Davies, headteacher at Monmouth Comprehensive School, said: "The moment you walk into Osbaston School you are aware of the dynamic of learning.

"I have seen the school change with Mrs Jones at the head into a vibrant community of learners with children at the core.

"The environment promotes learning. Her approach with all is inclusive, engaging, equitable and Mrs Jones has the highest expectations of everyone.

"As a headteacher she accepts nothing other than the best of herself and all she works with, to secure the best outcomes for children.

"Mrs Jones is an outstanding teacher and is always looking to innovate and create new approaches and methodologies to improve the quality of learning."
