An excellent entry of 17 cattle was forward for the Christmas Primestock Show and Sale at Abergavenny on Tuesday 4th December. The keenly contested Classes were judged by Doug Willis, Cwmbran, and Colin Watts, Brecon. The overall Show Champion was awarded to a classy Limousin cross Heifer exhibited by G.E. Phillips & Son, Penrhos, weighing 595kg. She eventually sold to the Judge Doug Willis, at 218p/kg, who purchased a large number of quality cattle for his high class butchers shops in Cwmbran. The Reserve Champion was awarded to the leading Steer, an eye catching Limousin cross, exhibited by well known farming family of. G Sevenoaks & Sons, Cross Ash, Abergavenny. The Steer fetched 235p/kg (£1410) at auction after competitive bidding and was knocked down to the Judge Doug Willis. With a large company of buyers present all cattle sold particularly well, to level in excess of £1000 apiece. The well supported sheep classes saw regular vendor Chris Ball, Abergavenny, take the Champion and Reserve tickets with his well bred Texel cross lambs. With recent carcase success at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair it came as no surprise he led both the Continental cross lamb Classes. The Champions weighing 42.4kg sold at £95 (224p/kg) to Robert Clode, the owner of The Cripple Creek Inn, Raglan. The Reserve Champions from the same home peaked at £66 (175.5p/kg) selling to Weeks Wholesale Meats, Cardiff. Mr Clode also purchased several pens of quality lambs.
