A 67-year old man from Coleford, Gloucestershire, who died following a road traffic collision was named by the police as William Edward Lewis. Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident which occurred at the bus stop opposite the Red Lion Public House in the village on the busy A49 trunk road at 10.50am on Saturday, July 5th. Three vehicles were involved, a double-decker bus, a JCB tractor and a VW Golf car. The bus and tractor were heading north on the A49 when the tractor was in collision with the bus and then the VW Golf, which was travelling south. The driver of the VW Golf received fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the surviving drivers involved was arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was later bailed by police whilst further enquiries are completed. The Coroner has been informed. An inquest has been opened and adjourned. All the emergency services, including an ambulance crew, three rapid response vehicles, the County Air Ambulance from Strensham and two BASICS doctors from MARS (Mercia Accident Rescue Service) attended. The road was closed for several hours whilst police crash investigators carried out an examination of the scene and the site was cleared. Police are anxious to hear from any witnesses who have not yet contacted the police who may have seen the collision or who may have seen the vehicles involved immediately prior to the crash. Anyone with information is urged to contact PC Bob Anning of the Roads Policing Team at Hereford Police Station on 08457 444888. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a car, a tractor and a coach which had been involved in a collision. One person was confirmed dead at the scene. A 65 year old woman who was a passenger on the bus had neck pains; she was immobilised using a spinal board and neck collar and was taken to Hereford County Hospital. The driver and other passengers from the bus were all assessed by crews and were discharged at the scene." Later on that afternoon there was a three-vehicle collision on the A49 at Much Birch and the driver of one vehicle failed to stop after the crash. A silver Renault taxi, an orange Suzuki Vitara and an unknown red car were travelling south in line on the A49 towards Ross at Much Birch. As the two lead vehicles were braking, a collision occurred involving the rear red car, which then left the scene. The collision occurred while the A49 was still closed further south following the fatal crash at Peterstow. The driver of the taxi was taken to hospital with minor whiplash injuries. No one else was reported injured. Police are keen to trace the driver of the red vehicle and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision at Much Birch. They would also like to speak to anyone who has seen a red car that has sustained front-end damage over the last weekend. Anyone with information should contact PC Bob Conway at Hereford Police Station on 08457 444888.
