DRIVERS who use the A40 between Whitchurch and Monmouth are being warned that the dual carriageway is to close for two nights next month.
National Highways identified in March that several drains along the A40 between Dixton Roundabout in Monmouth and Whitchurch close to the Leys Bend Rockfall, that required urgent repairs.
The drains on the eastbound carriageway were repaired under emergency closures to ensure the continued serviceability of the A40.
National Highways is now returning to repair the drains on the westbound carriageway, under overnight closures on June 6 and 7.
The agency stated that during this time, it will set up multiple diversion routes to help cater for all overnight road user needs, which are shown on the diversion route map.
All A40 HGV through traffic will be diverted via the M5 and M4.
Local traffic will be diverted up the A49 towards Hereford, before then travelling on the A465 towards Abergavenny, and then rejoining the A40 towards Monmouth.
A spokesman for National Highways said: “Please help encourage drivers to use our diversion route and not follow their own routes during the overnight closures as this can impact on local communities.
“Not only do local roads have lower speed restrictions, but they also aren’t meant for large vehicles or high volumes of traffic and often have weight restrictions in place. It can also lead to more congestion, increasing the risk of accidents for both motorists and pedestrians.
“Please stick to the agreed diversion route and help keep everybody safe. I apologise in advance for any disruption caused by these drainage repairs.”
