St Mary's Priory Church, Monmouth, was full on Saturday as people travelled from far-away places to join those in the diocese who were marking the tenth anniversary of women priests in Wales. Sister Una Kroll, the first woman to be ordained priest in the diocese returned to the parish where she served to preach at the service. She recalled the day in 1970 when, a lone woman alongside fourteen male ordinands, she was made a deaconess. The chaplain who took the rehearsal for that ordination service in Southwark was one Dominic Walker, now Bishop of Monmouth! Later this month, 22nd – 24th January, there will be a conference at St Michael's College Llandaff with the theme 'Celebrate the Past, Imagine the Future'. Keynote speakers are: Canon Mary Stallard of St Asaph, theologian Professor Mary Grey, and Bishop Christina Odenberg who was the first woman bishop in the Church of Sweden. Women clergy from Monmouth will be contributing to the discussions. The conference is open to all and information can be obtained from St Michael's College. Bishop Christina will make history when she presides at a provincial celebration in Llandaff Cathedral at 7.30pm on Tuesday 23rd January. BBC Wales will be recording the service for broadcast on Sunday 28th January. The service promises to be 'upbeat with a refreshing new liturgy'. Singers who would like to join the choir are invited to attend a rehearsal in St Mark's Gabalfa at 2pm on Saturday 20th January.
