MORE than 40 drivers were caught by Gwent Police before Christmas as part of their Christmas Drink/Drug Drive campaign.
Launched at the start of December, the campaign was to remind people of the dangers of driving under the influence and it urged people not to get behind the wheel if they are under the influence.
Police also asked the public to anonymously report offenders using their new text service.
Between 1st December and 18th December, 41 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drink and eight people have been arrested for drug driving.
Police continued to conduct roadside breath tests 24 hours a day, seven days a week over the festive period.
Operational Support Chief Inspector, Martyn Smith said: “We are committed to making the roads in Wales safer and year on year we raise awareness of the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs through campaigns such as this one.
“We recently launched a texting facility to allow people to contact us anonymously if they know someone who drink or drug drives, all we need is the car registration, make, model, location, time and driver details if known, just text us.
“The Christmas festivities and New Year are a time for enjoyment, and whilst I would encourage everyone to have a good time, it is important to reiterate, if you drink, don’t drive and if you drive, don’t drink, it’s that simple.
“If you have any information relating to someone who may be driving after drinking or taking drugs please let us know by texting us on 07464 645 100, or report it to 101. In an emergency always call 999.”
