Speed limit changes to be considered after petition

THE speed limit around Tintern is being investigated by a Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) group after a community push for the extension of the 30mph speed limit.

A petition presented to the council in October called for 30mph speed limit enforced on the A466 though Tintern to be extended towards the Old Station.

An MCC spokesperson said: “The council’s Strong Communities Select Committee has established a task and finish group to consider road safety across Monmouthshire as a whole. The group has yet to decide which examples to test any policy against. It is multi-agency and its terms of reference are attached.

“We hope to conclude the work by the summer and make recommendations to the relevant cabinet member. As a task and finish group, once recommendations are made to cabinet, it will cease to exist.

“The council may decide to use the A466 at Tintern as a case study, but many different examples exist which could be applied.”

A number of traffic incidents, including fatalities, have occurred on the stretch of road in recent years.
